Are you a Scholar of China, Russia, Greater Middle East, Nuclear, or Cyber Security Issues? Then Consider Applying for One of These Open Rank Professorships at Navy’s Senior Academic, Research, and Gaming Institution

Here are multiple great opportunities to join a world-class research community where scholarship and policy come together daily in a prime seaside location. The oldest continuing institution of its kind in the world, and the U.S. Navy’s “Home of Thought,” the Naval War College educates and develops leaders, helps define the future Navy and associated roles and missions, supports combat readiness, and strengthens global maritime partnerships. Newport is a short drive from the Boston-area academic community, a regular train ride from New York, and a brief flight from Washington, DC. Scroll down through the photos below and tell me you don’t want to make Newport your new intellectual home!

CLICK HERE FOR INFORMATION ON THE FIVE OPEN RANK PROFESSORSHIPS THAT THE CENTER FOR NAVAL WARFARE STUDIES (CNWS, THE NAVAL WAR COLLEGE’S DEDICATED RESEARCH ARM) SEEKS TO FILL:

In 1981, almost a century after Stephen B. Luce founded the Naval War College as “a place of original research on all questions relating to war and to statesmanship connected with war, or the prevention of war,” the Center for Naval Warfare Studies was established within the College as a nexus for broadly based, advanced research on the naval contribution to a national strategy. Working in close conjunction with the teaching departments, this revitalized research arm of the College has thus fulfilled Luce’s vision of the institution as a center of both scholarship and original research—an academic establishment which would serve as the home of theory and in-depth thinking for the naval profession in the United States.

The Center directly complements the curriculum at the Naval War College by providing a place for researching important professional issues which, in turn, inform and stimulate the faculty and students in the classroom. Moreover, from its very beginning, the Center has linked the Naval War College to the fleet and policymakers in Washington by serving as a focal point, stimulus, and major source of strategic and campaign thought, by integrating strategic, campaign, and tactical concepts, by linking strategic concerns with technological developments, and finally, by testing and evaluating concepts through war gaming.

SPECIFIC DETAILS ON CHINA RESEARCH PROFESSORSHIP:

To fill this professorship in its China Maritime Studies Institute, the Naval War College is looking for the best possible candidate, regardless of seniority. Do you have proven ability to conduct sophisticated Chinese-language research on China maritime and security issues? Are you a team player who is eager to work closely with a group of talented faculty and staff to produce cutting-edge work in this important area? Do you want your efforts to have direct policy relevance and impact? If so, this could be the perfect job for you… Be sure to apply well in advance of the 30 November deadline!

Center for Naval Warfare Studies

The United States Naval War College (NWC) anticipates a full-time faculty opening in the Center for Naval Warfare Studies (CNWS) in Newport, RI, and invites applications for the position of Professor with rank and salary commensurate with experience and credentials.

The Naval War College is a graduate-level Professional Military Education institution serving the Nation, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Navy. The College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and offers a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

CNWS serves as the nexus for broad-based, advanced research on the naval contribution to a national strategy. The Center produces scholarship and original research and fosters critical and innovative thinking on current and evolving operational challenges of importance for the Navy and the Nation. The Center links the Naval War College to the fleet and policymakers in Washington by serving as a focal point for strategic and operational thought; by integrating strategic, operational, and tactical concepts; by linking strategic concerns with technological developments; and finally, by testing and evaluating concepts through methods including war gaming, operations research, policy analysis, and traditional scholarship.

The prospective faculty member will be a member of the Center’s China Maritime Studies Institute (CMSI). He or she will focus primarily on the People’s Republic of China’s naval, military, and national security strategies, policies, and capabilities, especially involving regions and potential crisis areas with significant maritime implications. He or she should focus on issues affecting core U.S. national security interests, including but not limited to Asian security broadly defined, Chinese decision-making and civil-military-relations, naval and maritime capabilities, nuclear strategy and operations, and Chinese relations with its neighbors in the Indo-Pacific.

Qualified candidates should have a terminal degree from an accredited university; a research-oriented Ph.D. is preferred. A high degree of competency in reading and speaking the Chinese (Mandarin) language is highly desirable. The best candidates will have experience in evaluating strategic, operational, and tactical concepts; knowledge of relevant military systems; and a sound background in research methods. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and capable of obtaining a Department of Defense TOP SECRET/SCI security clearance.

The selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment drug screening test and to random drug testing thereafter. Any current or prior military service should be described including assignments, positions held, highest rank attained, and dates of service.

Applicants should reference VA#NWC-16-04 and forward their application package to:cnwschnvacancy@usnwc.edu. The application package should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae or resume, and three references. Applications will be accepted until November 30, 2015.

Questions can be e-mailed to Dr. Peter Dombrowski at dombrowp@usnwc.edu. The Naval War College is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
