Meeting and Tour of Tokyo’s Sensō-ji Temple and Asakusa District with JANAFA (日米ネービー友好協会) Leadership

This January, I had the pleasure of meeting with leaders from the U.S.-Japan Navy Friendship Association (JANAFA). JANAFA plays an important role in supporting constructive relations between the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF, 海上自衛隊) and the U.S. Navy. This partnership, as part of the larger U.S.-Japan alliance, was shown to have particular value during Operation Tomodachi (“Operation Friend(s),”トモダチ作戦). During this humanitarian effort, following the tragic 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, 24,000 U.S. military personnel, three Global Hawk reconnaissance planes, and a wide variety of U.S. naval ships and other aircraft have helped to support Japanese disaster relief. JANAFA has also been extremely generous in its work to translate English-language strategic research publications into Japanese so that they can reach a broader audience, even if highly specialized or technical in nature.

親善行事 (米海大エリクソン准教授案内)

1 月29 日（土）、米海軍大学の中国海洋研究所（CMSI: China Maritime Studies Institute） 所属のアンドリュー・エリクソン准教授（Andrew S. Erickson）を、中尾誠三副会長を始め5 名の役員と自ら写真係を務めて下さった上林将人会員が、浅草仲見世と浅草寺を案内しました。

エリクソン教授は、昨年夏の会報誌38 号以来「米国から見た中国のSea Power」の論文等紹介或いはJANAFA ウェッブ・サイトの「中国の海洋進出」の記事掲載でご記憶の方もあろうかと思います。新進気鋭の学者であり極めて活発に活動されている方です。

エリクソン准教授は、防衛研究所主催の「平成22 年度アジア太平洋安全保障ワークショップ」（非公開会議）に前日28 日まで参加され、当日夕刻19：25 成田発で帰国されるところ、暫しの間の浅草見学となった次第です。その経緯は、昨年末にエリクソン教授の来日を廣田恵理事が知り、この機会に御礼方々何か企画できないかと発案、浅草寺見学等の担当をされていた初谷龍夫理事及び遠山和雄理事が一肌脱いでくれることになりました。また、岡副会長の賛同を得ると共に中尾副会長が参加されることで計画外ではありましたがJANAFA の事業として扱われることになったのです。各理事のフットワークの良さと、柔軟な対応はとても気持の良いものでした。 。。。
